Abu Simbel, 280 km south of Aswan near Sudan, holds Ramesses II's most spectacular monument: four 20-meter seated colossi flanking the entrance to a rock-cut temple extending 60 meters into the cliff. Twice yearly (February 22 and October 22), sunlight penetrates the full length to illuminate the statues in the innermost sanctuary — the 'Sun Miracle of Abu Simbel.' The entire complex was relocated 65 meters higher in 1968 by UNESCO to save it from Lake Nasser's rising waters — an operation involving cutting the temples into 2,000+ blocks and reassembling them.
