Introduction
Heves County sits in northern Hungary between the Mátra and Bükk mountain ranges, with Eger — a baroque hilltop town of castle ruins, Ottoman minarets, and wine cellars — as its undisputed centrepiece. The county contains Hungary's highest point (Kékestető, 1,014 metres, in the Mátra range) and some of its most varied landscapes: volcanic hills, beech forests, limestone caves, and thermal springs within a compact area easily reached from Budapest.
Travel Types
Eger: castle, minaret & wine cellars
The castle, the minaret, the baroque Dobó Square, the Lyceum's Camera Obscura (one of few working examples in Europe), and the Valley of the Beautiful Women wine cellars — all in a walkable hilltop town 1.5 hours from Budapest by train.
Bull's Blood & Eger wine country
Egri Bikavér (Bull's Blood) is the flagship red blend, traditionally tasted in the hillside cellars of Szépasszony-völgy. Eger also produces excellent whites (Egri Csillag) and single-varietal reds. Cellar-door tastings are informal and inexpensive.
Bükk & Mátra hiking
Bükk National Park offers forested trails, limestone caves, and karst formations. The Mátra hills include Kékestető (1,014 m) — Hungary's highest point — with an observation tower and gentle walking terrain. Both ranges are accessible for day hikes from Eger.
Heves County Travel Notes
- •Eger is roughly 1.5 hours from Budapest Keleti by direct InterCity train. Trains run frequently.
- •The Valley of the Beautiful Women (Szépasszony-völgy) cellars are typically open from late morning. Weekends are busiest; midweek visits are more relaxed. Some cellars close in winter.
- •The Eger minaret is a narrow, steep climb — not suitable for those with mobility issues or claustrophobia, but the view from the top is worth the effort.
- •Eger's thermal baths have both a traditional Turkish section and a modern pool complex. Bring swimsuit and towel.
- •Kékestető in the Mátra can be reached by car or bus from Gyöngyös. The summit has a TV tower, observation deck, and a small ski resort in winter.
- •The Aggtelek caves (UNESCO, shared with Slovakia) are a day trip from Eger (~1.5 hours by car). Guided tours of varying lengths are available; the longest enters the Slovak side.
