Travel Types
A single day's drive around the peninsula takes in Kirkjufell, Búðir black church, Djúpalónssandur beach, Arnarstapi-Hellnar coastal walk, Snæfellsjökull glacier views, Stykkishólmur harbour, and — if the weather cooperates — sunset light on the glacier. Often called the best single-day drive in Iceland.
Reykholt (Snorri Sturluson's estate, medieval study centre), Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls, Deildartunguhver hot spring, Víðgelmir lava cave (Iceland's largest, guided tours), and the Borgarfjörður valley — the heartland of the Icelandic sagas.
From December to March, orcas hunt herring in the waters off Grundarfjörður beneath Kirkjufell. Boat tours run weather-dependent. Snæfellsnes is one of the most reliable orca-watching locations in Iceland.
Kirkjufell with waterfall is Iceland's single most iconic photograph. Búðir black church, Arnarstapi arch, Djúpalónssandur, and Snæfellsjökull at golden hour offer world-class landscape photography within a compact area.
- •Snæfellsnes can be done as a long day trip from Reykjavik (170 km each way, plus the peninsula loop), but an overnight in Stykkishólmur, Grundarfjörður, or Arnarstapi gives time to explore properly.
- •The road around Snæfellsnes is fully paved (Route 54) and suitable for standard cars. Some secondary roads to trailheads may be gravel.
- •Kirkjufell and its waterfall are best photographed from the small parking area on the south side of the road. The mountain itself should not be climbed without a guide — the terrain is deceptive and dangerous.
- •The Baldur ferry from Stykkishólmur to Brjánslækur (Westfjords) crosses Breiðafjörður Bay in about 2.5 hours and includes a stop at Flatey island. Reservations recommended in summer.
- •Borgarfjörður is inland and weather-protected relative to the coast. Hraunfossar and Deildartunguhver are accessible year-round and make a good half-day loop from Borgarnes.
- •Whale watching (orcas) from Grundarfjörður runs December-March and is weather-dependent. Book in advance, dress for extreme cold on the water.
