Basel-Stadt, Switzerland

State guide with cities, regions, and key information.

Introduction
Basel-Stadt is Switzerland's smallest canton by area — 37 square kilometres — yet it contains one of Europe's highest densities of world-class museums, a globally recognised art fair, a UNESCO-listed carnival, pharmaceutical industry headquarters, and three-country connectivity from a single tram system.

Discover Basel-Stadt

At 37.1 square kilometres, Basel-Stadt is Switzerland's smallest canton by area and one of the most densely packed urban territories in Europe. The canton is effectively a city-state: Basel itself, plus the village communes of Riehen — where the Fondation Beyeler sits in a Renzo Piano pavilion beside a pond — and Bettingen at the German border. Two half-cantons were created in 1833 when Basel-Landschaft broke away after a rural revolt; Basel-Stadt retained the old city and its institutions. That compact geography means a visitor can cross the entire canton in a single tram ride and still encounter world-class art, Romanesque architecture, riverside leisure, and a glimpse of two neighbouring countries within walking distance of the central train station.

Important Basel-Stadt Travel Notes
  • Fasnacht hotel rooms sell out 12 or more months in advance; the Morgestraich Monday is the single most demanded night in the canton's calendar.
  • Art Basel week in June fills accommodation across Basel-Stadt and neighbouring German and French towns — book as soon as fair dates are announced.
  • EuroAirport is physically located in France; Swiss customs apply only on the Swiss-side access road, and passengers clear immigration at the Basel terminal side.
  • CHF is the currency; euros are accepted at some tourist-facing businesses but at poor exchange rates — ATM withdrawals in Swiss francs are strongly preferable.
  • BVB tram line 8 crosses into Germany without passport control, but passengers must hold a valid ticket covering the extended German zone; the Swiss Travel Pass does not cover beyond the Swiss border zone.
  • The Swiss Museum Pass covers admission to the Kunstmuseum, Fondation Beyeler, Museum Tinguely, and most institutions in the canton; the two-day pass costs CHF 144.
