Chiang Mai, Thailand

State guide with cities, regions, and key information.

Introduction
Chiang Mai is northern Thailand's cultural heartland — a province where over 300 Buddhist temples sit among misty mountains, night markets fill centuries-old streets with the scent of khao soi and sai oua, and the old walled city still feels like a place apart from Bangkok's megacity energy. Founded in 1296 as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, Chiang Mai blends deep historical roots with a thoroughly modern creative scene that has made it Southeast Asia's most compelling second city.

Discover Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai's old city is a roughly square moat-ringed core measuring about 1.5 kilometres per side, containing the densest concentration of Buddhist temples in Thailand. Wat Phra Singh, at the western end of Ratchadamnoen Road, houses the Phra Singh Buddha in a chapel of exquisite Lanna woodcarving and gold-leaf murals. Wat Chedi Luang's partially ruined brick chedi — once the tallest structure in Lanna at 82 metres — dominates the city centre; the city pillar shrine sits in its grounds. Wat Chiang Man, the oldest temple in the city (founded 1296), contains two ancient and deeply venerated Buddha images. Outside the moat, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is the province's most iconic landmark: a gilded chedi atop a mountain ridge accessible by a 306-step naga-flanked staircase or a short songthaew ride, offering panoramic views over the entire Chiang Mai valley. Best visited at dawn before the tour buses arrive.

Important Notes for Chiang Mai Visitors
  • Burning Season (February-April): Agricultural fires cause severe air pollution (AQI regularly exceeds 200). Consider an N95 mask and check air quality apps daily. Many travellers avoid this period entirely.
  • Temple Etiquette: Dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees) at all temples. Remove shoes before entering any chapel or building. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep enforces strictly.
  • Songthaew System: Red pickup trucks are shared taxis — tell the driver your destination before boarding. Standard fare 30-40 baht within the city. Don't confuse with tuk-tuks, which charge more.
  • Cool Season (November-February): Best weather, 15-30°C, perfect for trekking and outdoor activities. Book accommodation early for Loi Krathong (November) and New Year period.
  • Elephant Sanctuaries: Choose no-ride, observation-based facilities. Avoid any operation that offers elephant shows, painting, or riding with a howdah.
  • Doi Inthanon: Bring warm layers — temperatures at the summit can drop below 10°C even when Chiang Mai city is 30°C. The Kew Mae Pan trail requires a local guide (arranged at the trailhead).
  • Yi Peng Lantern Festival: Coincides with Loi Krathong in November — thousands of paper lanterns released into the sky create one of Thailand's most photogenic events. Main ceremonies held near Mae Jo University.
  • Altitude & Hydration: The city sits at 310 metres but day trips go much higher. Drink plenty of water, especially during hot season and at Doi Inthanon elevations.
