Discover Chiang Mai
Travel Types
Over 300 Buddhist temples within the old walled city and surrounding hills — from the gilded chedi of Doi Suthep to the ancient ruins of Wiang Kum Kam.
Thailand's cooking school capital: daily classes with market tours, plus khao soi, sai oua, and night market street food that defines northern Thai flavour.
Pioneering sanctuary model for rescued elephants — observe, feed, and bathe elephants in semi-natural habitats without riding.
Doi Inthanon's cloud forests, Chiang Dao's limestone peaks, and multi-day hill-tribe treks through Karen, Hmong, and Lahu villages.
Sunday Walking Street, the Night Bazaar, Warorot Market, and the Nimmanhaemin creative district — handicrafts, street food, and contemporary Thai design.
Reliable internet, affordable co-working spaces, specialty coffee scene, and a cost of living roughly a third of Bangkok's — Chiang Mai is Southeast Asia's most established remote-work base.
- •Burning Season (February-April): Agricultural fires cause severe air pollution (AQI regularly exceeds 200). Consider an N95 mask and check air quality apps daily. Many travellers avoid this period entirely.
- •Temple Etiquette: Dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees) at all temples. Remove shoes before entering any chapel or building. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep enforces strictly.
- •Songthaew System: Red pickup trucks are shared taxis — tell the driver your destination before boarding. Standard fare 30-40 baht within the city. Don't confuse with tuk-tuks, which charge more.
- •Cool Season (November-February): Best weather, 15-30°C, perfect for trekking and outdoor activities. Book accommodation early for Loi Krathong (November) and New Year period.
- •Elephant Sanctuaries: Choose no-ride, observation-based facilities. Avoid any operation that offers elephant shows, painting, or riding with a howdah.
- •Doi Inthanon: Bring warm layers — temperatures at the summit can drop below 10°C even when Chiang Mai city is 30°C. The Kew Mae Pan trail requires a local guide (arranged at the trailhead).
- •Yi Peng Lantern Festival: Coincides with Loi Krathong in November — thousands of paper lanterns released into the sky create one of Thailand's most photogenic events. Main ceremonies held near Mae Jo University.
- •Altitude & Hydration: The city sits at 310 metres but day trips go much higher. Drink plenty of water, especially during hot season and at Doi Inthanon elevations.
