British Embassy Abu Dhabi

Embassy of UK in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Overview

The British Embassy in Abu Dhabi is the primary UK diplomatic mission in the UAE and the first point of contact for UK visa information in the country. UAE nationals and residents applying for UK visitor, student, work, or family visas submit applications through VFS Global UK Visa Application Centres in the UAE — in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The Embassy does not issue visas directly; UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) makes all decisions. The Embassy also supports the large British community — approximately 240,000 UK nationals across the UAE — providing emergency consular assistance, notarial services, and emergency travel documents. Abu Dhabi is the UAE capital and seat of the federal government; the British community here includes professionals in finance, energy, defence, and education.

Visa Services

UAE nationals and residents require a UK visa for visits, study, work, and family reunification. Applications are submitted through VFS Global UK Visa Application Centres — centres operate in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Check https://www.gov.uk/apply-uk-visa for the latest requirements and appointment booking. The Embassy itself does not process visa applications.

Consular Services

The Embassy provides emergency assistance for British nationals in difficulty — illness, injury, crime, or bereavement. Emergency travel documents are issued for lost, stolen, or damaged passports. Notarial and documentary services are available. The Embassy provides professional referrals (lawyers, funeral directors, translators) and guidance on arrests, deaths abroad, and hospitalization. Trade & Export Support

UK-UAE bilateral trade exceeds £25 billion annually, one of the UK's largest trading relationships in the Middle East. Key sectors include financial and professional services, advanced manufacturing, aerospace, defence, education, and healthcare. The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) operates from the Embassy to support UK exporters entering the UAE market and the wider Gulf region.

Investment Opportunities

Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth funds — ADIA and Mubadala — are major investors in UK infrastructure, technology, and real estate. The Embassy supports two-way investment flows and can connect UK businesses with Abu Dhabi's business development ecosystem, including ADGM (Abu Dhabi Global Market) as a financial free zone.

Business Support

DBT at the Embassy provides market intelligence, export support, introductions, and networking events for UK businesses targeting the UAE and Gulf markets. Sectors with strong UK presence include financial services, construction, professional services, education, and renewables.

Cultural & Educational Programs

British Council UAE operates across the country, running English-language courses, IELTS examinations, and year-round cultural and education programmes. Several UK universities have campuses or academic partnerships in Abu Dhabi, including NYU Abu Dhabi (with UK academic links) and Cranfield University partnerships.

Service Area

The British Embassy Abu Dhabi serves British nationals in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the western UAE. British nationals in Dubai and the Northern Emirates are primarily served by the British Embassy Dubai.
